(KPOPLINE) - Despite how strong and powerful he is in "The Descendant of the Sun", Song Joong Ki was once just a weak guy being killed terribly.

The movie was adapted to a terrifying incident in Korea in 1997 which significantly affected the relationship between America and Korea. Jo Jongpil, a 22-year-old student, was stabbed 9 times with a knife in the bathroom of a Burger shop in Itaewon. The suspects were supposed to be Edward Lee and Arthur Patterson, the two 18 Korean American guys, were enjoying party with 20 other guys.

The court of justice convicted Edward Lee of murder and sentenced him to life in prison but then the punishment was reduced to 20 years in prison. In 1999, the Supreme Court declared that Edward was completely acquitted because of the lack of evidence.

The lawsuit went into the deadlock so the Korean government made a $ 34,000 compensation and was forced to terminate the 15-year deadline, which was in December 2009. However, this decision was luckily unable to be implimented.

In 2009, the movie 'The Case of Itaewon Homicide' acted out the case in various angles. The two suspects constantly blamed for each other and the opposite statement, prosecutor Park began to recognize the conflict in each testimony. It seemed they all told a lie and he could not believe Alex Jung (Edward Lee) was as clean-handed as before.

According to the movie, Arthur Patterson was really the murderer, because of the blood on his head, neck and shirt was much larger than Alex. However, Robert could not be prosecuted because he was the son of an US military contractor. This unfair judgement of the Minister of Justice is just one of the injustices of the US government.

The 1966 bilateral commitment between the two countries provided the legal rights and obligations of US troops in Korea, which caused a big obstacle for investigations into cases committed by American soldiers and their family members in Korea.

It can be said that the movie 'The Case of Itaewon Homicide' as a break for US-Korean relations, protesting to the decision to end the case. South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sent an extract requesting to extradite  Arthur Patterson from Sunnyvale, California to South Korea.

However, the US government did not provide the exact location of Arthur. Thus, a group of Korean TV stations discovered his place in Sunnyvale. Arthur was escorted to the US court before being taken to Korea.

The case was re-opened with a new verdict in 2016: Arthur was the only killer to kill male student Jo Jong-pil and Edward are accomplice. Arthur was sentenced to 20 years in prison at his juvenile.

Song Joong Ki played Jo Jong Pil role

After all, why was Jo Jong Pil killed? The murder and the victim did not know each other but just because of a small conflict, this student was deprived of everything.
